The term "chivalry" - from the Old French term chevalerie. translated as "horse soldiery". Originally, referred only to horse-mounted men, from French for horse, cheval, later associated with knightly ideals.
Chevalier originally meant "man of aristocratic standing, probably noble ancestry, capable, if called, of equipping
himself with war horse, arms of heavy cavalryman; and who has been through certain rituals." Therefore, during the Middle Ages, the plural chevalerie (transformed in English into the word "chivalry") originally denoted the body of heavy cavalry upon formation in the field. In English, the term appears from 1292 (note that cavalry is from the Italian form of the same word).
